Business + Boundaries = Balance

Burnout isn’t a badge of honour. It’s a warning sign. Yet for many business owners, working through exhaustion becomes the norm.

I did it and hit burnout in 2012. It took me years to feel 100% again. So, it’s safe to say I learnt the hard way. But there is better way to stay productive and protect our health. A more sustainable way.

At The Star PA, I live by the formula: Business + Boundaries = Balance.
It’s simple but powerful.

Creating boundaries in your business helps you stay on top of your priorities without sacrificing your wellbeing. Whether that means setting work hours, carving out space to rest, or knowing when to ask for help – these boundaries are key to sustainability.

Here are my 5 top boundaries that every business owner needs:

  1. Working Hours that Stick
🕒 Choose your working hours – and respect them yourself first. Add them to your email signature, out-of-office, Google profile, and client onboarding.
  2. Clear Communication Channels
💬 Decide how clients can contact you (e.g. email only, no WhatsApp, Slack for team only). Let them know – and stick to it.
  3. Realistic Turnaround Times
📅 Set expectations for how long tasks take. Consistency is better than surprise speed. Always add extra time for emergencies or last-minute enquiries.
  4. Protected Time for You
⏳ Block out weekly non-negotiables: thinking time, admin, lunch, rest. You can’t pour from an empty cup, remember?
  5. Defined Scope of Work
🖥️ Be crystal clear on what’s included in your services – and what’s not. Scope creep causes stress and muddies the waters fast.

Bonus tip:
Boundaries are kind – to you and your clients. They build trust, clarity, and calm.

This is the time of year many people are craving more breathing room in their business – so that family gets the quality time they deserve, and summer can be properly enjoyed.

Let me share a real example:
My client D, who organises events for business owners, came to me about three years ago feeling overwhelmed. “I feel that I’m always chasing everybody, and I don’t want to tell them off, but I’m spending so much time chasing them that I can’t grow my own business,” they said.

I asked them, “What do you enjoy the most about your business?” Their answer? “The nurturing of my members.”

So, we agreed – they would focus on nurturing and being the ‘good cop’, and I would take care of the logistics and be the ‘bad cop’ (although a nice one!). I introduced myself to their members and explained that my emails would usually contain a call to action and a deadline, typically giving them around a week to respond. I also kindly asked them to be mindful of the admin work that goes on behind the scenes to make their events run smoothly.

Since then, I’ve only had to chase a handful of times. The difference? Clear expectations and healthy boundaries – and sticking to them!

D continues to do the nurturing, and when I take time off, they’re confident enough to step into the ‘bad cop’ role for a few days too!

And the best part? Since working in a more balanced way, D has been able to open another group – something they didn’t have the bandwidth for before.

Let me share another quick example:
My client H is a creative business owner who used to reply to every client message within minutes – even at 10pm. They worried that delayed responses would look unprofessional or cost them work.

We worked together to set clearer expectations with clients, including realistic response times and dedicated days for client work versus admin. We even drafted a new out-of-office and email signature to reflect this.

The result?
Clients respected the boundaries. H felt calmer, slept better, and (their words!) “finally felt like a business owner, not just a firefighter.”
